Arthur Sheridan Enhancement Project, Design Report, Bronx, NY
The Arthur Sheridan Expressway (I-895) connects the Bruckner Expressway (I-278) to the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95). The NYSDOT is de-designating and converting the Sheridan Expressway to a boulevard with three, at grade, signalized intersections that will provide pedestrian and bicycle traffic connections between the aesthetic waterfront on the East side of the highway and residential/commercial/retail neighborhoods on the West.
SIMCO developed balanced vehicular and pedestrian volume networks for 15 intersections during the peak time periods for Existing, Estimated Time of Completion (ETC) and ETC+20 (2040) conditions. The build volumes for 2020 and 2040 were developed using AIMSUN which considered the proposed changes in traffic due to the addition of new intersections, ramps, and the de-designation of the highway. An Origin-Destination study based on license plate surveys was conducted in order to reassign vehicles based on the proposed project.
SIMCO developed lighting and signal design for the three new intersections for the Design Report. SIMCO conducted existing and future condition capacity analyses and optimized signal timing plans for the new intersections using Synchro during the peak time periods. Mitigation measures were proposed for impacted intersections to insure better progression along both local roads and the highway. Travel time runs were recorded along key routes through the study area for calibrating the AIMSUN model. Crash and pedestrian analyses were also conducted.
